Keen on Kiana

Like every other teenager, Kiana Fernandes enjoys sleeping and hanging out with friends in her free time. Though there is more to her. She is a senior at South and an Editor in Chief for the newspaper. Some of her other hobbies include reading, writing, and playing the clarinet.

Fernandes has always enjoyed music. She started playing the piano when she was eight. Once she got to middle school, she joined band. She chose to play the clarinet only because the line to play the saxophone was too long. Playing the clarinet ended up being a good fit for her. She wants to play the clarinet as long as she can, even if that means joining community bands after college.

Being an only child, she is very close with her parents, especially her mom.

“I don’t think there is a single thing she doesn’t know about me,” Fernandes said.

She learned to have an imagination at a young age and grew up to be independent. High School wasn’t always fun for her. She even wanted to get a GED freshman year.

“Fun fact: I hate high school, can’t stand it,” Fernandes said.

This year she is trying to change her mindset. Some of her favorite classes at South were AP psychology and sociology. These classes taught her how to view herself and the society around her. So, just like any other senior, she is ready to graduate.
