Music in the brain of a teenager

Have you ever wondered what kinds of music teens listen to and think about?

Music can be a very influential medium in the brain of a young adult and finding out what kind of music they listen to is just as important. Students believe they can socialize, have fun, and even respond to their emotions through music.

“Well, I think one of the whole points of music is to connect through something, going to concerts gives you a chance to connect through people who like the same thing that you do,” said Megan Palmer (Journalism Teacher.)

Many other people agreed to this statement saying that concerts are an amazing opportunity to socialize through music.

According to aappublications.com, “Music plays an important role in the socialization of children and adolescents. Popular music is present almost everywhere, and it is easily available through the radio, various recordings, the Internet, and new technologies allowing adolescents to hear it in diverse settings and situations, alone or shared with friends.”

It is also very common to dislike specific types of music, the most popular being country music out of all of the interviewees.

“Country and K-Pop. I hate country music because it’s all about the same stuff, tractors, green fields, and breakups. I hate k-pop because it’s annoying and the beat isn’t good they’re cringy and they look like they’re from 2015. The songs just aren’t that good” said Reagan Kelley, Freshman.

Kyle Lackey (drama teacher) said he does not dislike any type of music.

“All of it is fine, I don’t have any strong opinions on any of it. There’s bad music in each genre and there’s good music in each genre” he said.

It is common at South for students to listen to pop and rap.

“I like to listen to anything on the radio, I also kinda like RMB,” said Zach Kramp, freshman.

The most popular answer to the question “What kind of music do you listen to?” was Rap music, the most popular artist being Juice WRLD.

According to aappublications.com again, “Music provides entertainment and distraction from problems and serves as a way to relieve tension and boredom. Some studies have reported that adolescents use popular music to deal with loneliness and to take control of their emotional status or mood.”

Some students could possibly feel upset, or lonely and take advantage of music to relieve their stress by just shutting down and listening to maybe their favorites, a friend’s recommendation, or something brand new.

Music is a very important aspect of human life because it can bring out so many emotions, and even make people express themselves the best.

Well, there you have it. Country music and K-Pop are very frowned upon, it’s very popular to love rap music and the everyday music that you hear on a station like 99.7. Some students like music that is very different from other people’s music interests.
