Saying Goodbye To The Class Of 2020

You never know how fast time flies until you’re a senior.

At South, seniors have mixed emotions about this being their last year of high school. Even though graduation isn’t until May, seniors have to start worrying about their overwhelming but exciting future ahead of them.

Maria Allred, senior, said that she’s thinking about going to Mizzou or Arkansas. She said she wanted to go to these colleges because they were drivable if she wanted to come home.

Brylie Goff, senior,  is also thinking about going to Mizzou and Xavier Jackson, senior,  wants to attend college in Arkansas.

Goff wants to go to Mizzou because lots of her friends are going there and it’s a big environment and school.

Jackson said he wanted to go to Arkansas because he loves the environment and campus.

Cody Chatham, senior, is the only one who is taking advantage of the A+ program. For his first two years of college he’s thinking about going to Maple Woods or Penn Valley, then transferring to another school.

When it comes to what seniors want to major in some of them know exactly what they want and some of them are still trying to figure that out. Allred is still trying to find a major that she’s interested in. Her backup plan is to go into business if there is not another option.

Goff said that she wanted to major in early childhood. She also said that it might change her mind while she’s in college.

Jackson said that he wants to major in Music Therapy or Music Education.

“Music is something I’m very passionate about,” Jackson said.

Chatham said that he wanted to major in nursing. He also said that his major could change.

Although Allred  and Goff played Tennis for South, they do not plan to play in college.. Jackson is planning to be participating in a sport while in college and that’s football.

“[I want] to do it because I started playing freshmen year for the first time,” he said.

Chatham is another senior who won’t be playing any sports while in college. He said that he’s grown out of soccer and since he’s a soccer coach he can pass down the knowledge so there’s no point in doing it anymore.

Chatham said, “I’m more focused on preparing for my career.”

When you’re in elementary school and the end of the school year comes around all you have to do is worry about who’s going to be in your class the next year. It’s a little different when the end of the year comes around your senior year.

“I’m scared of what the future holds because I have no idea what’s going to happen,” Allred said.

Goff was the complete opposite from Allred.

“I’m ready for college, but I’m going to miss being away from friends and family,” Goff said.

Chatham said that he wasn’t scared or nervous.

“I don’t like to look ahead, I like to take it one step at a time,” Chatham said.

He also said that it’s a big change but he is prepared.

Everyone has their favorite part of high school, whether it’s good friends, teachers, or just the experience in general. For Allred her favorite part of highschool is spending time with her friends.

“I never had a boring day or weekend because I found a good friend group.” Allred said.

Jackson’s favorite part of high school is wrestling.

“I didn’t think I would like wrestling,” Jackson said.

Chathams said that his favorite part of highschool was beating Rockhurst last year in soccer. Chatham was out because of an injury but he still went to every practice.

“Just seeing how hard my teammates worked, they deserved it,” Chatham said.

You learn a lot when it comes to being in high school. It doesn’t have to be just education it can be advice that you’ve gotten from upperclassmen or just things that you’ve seen and learned over the years.

One piece of advice Allred gave for the other classes was to live every day to the fullest since high school goes by super fast.

Allred also said, “Don’t spend time on irrelevant things.”

Goffs advice to the other classes was to do what you want to do and to not let anyone influence you. It seems like everyone wants to grow up and be independent, but Jacksons advice to the other classes was the opposite.

“Don’t grow up, make the most of every moment.” Jackson said.

High school can fly by, but you can make amazing memories that will last forever while you’re in it. From beating Rockhurst to hanging out with friends on weekends, high school can change the person you are.
