What Athletes Eat

Food is a big part of all athletes preparations for game day. Runners and swimmers may carb load while wrestlers may not eat at all to make weight.

Food can determine if you have the energy for the second half or if you are dragging along counting down the time until the game is over. So can south athletes tell the difference between eating good and bad foods before the game?

“When I eat something good before a game, I feel a lot better during and after the games, then when I just eat random things, ” said Briggs Bartosh, freshman football player.

Many high school sports teams will get snack bags for away games but home games they have to find food on their own.

“The snack bags we get for away definitely help because it gives me something to eat and they are good food, unlike home games where I run to like Quick Trip,” said Justin Moreno, sophomore soccer player.

Some sports like cross country will have pasta parties the night before meets to make sure runners are getting the right food.

“The pasta parties definitely help because I don’t have to worry about carb loading before meets,” said Tyler Clippard, sophomore cross country runner.

But when it comes to soccer, players don’t have parties, so what do they do before games?

“For home games, I will just grab something after school or go home and eat then come back, but for away games, I just eat the snack bags,” said Lucas Crane, sophomore soccer player.

Getting high school students to watch what they eat on their own can be a hard task but free food will definitely get them to eat up. And if they eat the right food, it can really help south bring home as many wins as possible.
