Exercise Efforts
As week two of at home learning is wrapping up, many people are finding new ways to keep themselves busy. With screen time and snacking at all time highs, it’s time to get out and exercise.
With there being nothing to do but eat junk or cook since everything is closed, the high possibility of weight gain at this time has been called the “quarantine 15”. Collectively that can be balanced with going on walks, runs, or doing a good old fashioned ab series.
Luckily, lots of students are combating the quarantine 15 and staying active in their neighborhoods or nearby parks. Zona Rosa may be closed, but fortunately, the great outdoors is wide open for use.
For spring sports, staying in shape is vital if the athletes are lucky enough to have a May season.
“I’ve been playing some tennis, especially at the beginning of quarantine, but now just in the driveway since the courts closed,” Adam Henn, junior, said.
Adam also occasionally works out and rides a bike to keep his stamina up for a possible varsity tennis season.
“Exercising has impacted my quarantine by giving me something to do. I have been running or walking at least 2 miles everyday and I honestly love it. I hope to continue to work out like I have for however long this lasts,” Sammy Hickey said, senior.
Hickey gets out of the house and burns some calories in between school work, when she’s in need of a break.
Besides staying fit, exercise can also make you happier. Simply moving your body has a positive chemical effect on your brain, reducing stress and improving mood. A study conducted by The University of Vermont found that 20 minutes of exercise can improve a person’s mood for up to 12 hours due to the endorphins released throughout your body.
With everything going on around us, it’s nice to release some endorphins and keep the positivity going.
