Salvaging Soccer Season
Girls Soccer Season. Another fallen victim of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although something trivial compared to the mass destruction this virus has caused, sports being canceled this spring has caused a lot of low spirits. For 270 days, South’s girl’s soccer team has prepared to take the field for this year’s season, but now, we might never get to step on the field together as a team again.
Getting the news that our season has been canceled (until further notice) made the reality of this strange time start to set in. Something that I, and my team, had been working toward for months had been ripped from us by the uncontrollable, and that really dampened the motivation of our entire team. Why push ourselves so hard to get no reward?
But we persevered. Starting the day after our season postponement was released, our coaches and captains got together to prepare our “2nd Preseason” and that entailed daily workouts to continue to improve our fitness, technical abilities, tactical awareness and mentality. Each day, a new “social-distancing” workout has been planned out for us, along with videos to watch to improve our knowledge of the game.
As a team, this adjustment has been anything but ordinary, but knowing that we can persevere through strange times like this has proven what type of team we truly are. So, to say we have hope that we will reunite on the field again this season would be an understatement because we know that if we keep working hard, we’ll get our reward.
