A Day in the Life

Coronavirus has caused travel throughout the US and the world to virtually stop altogether, which has severe consequences for restaurants, airlines, and of course, hotels. This is especially unfortunate for my dad, who runs several hotels around the Midwest.

Starting a couple of weeks ago, he has been in a state of constant stress. Every day brings new travel restrictions and closures, and therefore new struggles for hotel managers and owners everywhere. As of now, the current issue is whether or not the hotels are going to have to close indefinitely.

No one can or will travel right now anyway, but if the government orders non-essential businesses, including hotels, to close, that would obviously be very bad for my dad’s company and our family. The company has already had to let go of many of its employees since no money is coming in if no one is traveling or staying at hotels.

Despite the quarantine, my dad has been driving to Omaha and Wichita to visit the hotels and the remaining employees, trying to give them instructions on what to do, while attempting to figure that out himself. There is not much he can do, though.

The additional stress on my dad also creates stress on me and my siblings, and being quarantined together certainly doesn’t help. We will make it, though, and we could certainly be doing worse. Only time will tell what will become of this pandemic and what will happen in the next month or so, for my family and the hotels.
