Top 15 Movies To Watch In Quarantine
By Nico Leluga
- Django Unchained
Quentin Tarantino’s take on a western film that takes place in the deep antebellum south. Where Django is sold to a bounty hunter where he is granted freedom (but not really). Jamie Foxx, Leonardo Dicaprio, and Samuel L Jackson back up a great movie that raises questions about how free is a free man in the south.
- Kill Bill
The second Tarantino film to make the list. Uma Thurman wakes up from a coma after an attempt to murder her and goes on an absolute maniacal killing spree to avenge her would have been husband and unborn child. If you’re an action fan, this is the movie for you. If you’re a gore fan, that may be a little concerning, but this is also for you.
- Shawshank Redemption
Andy Dufresne is sentenced to prison for killing his wife and her lover, however he is an innocent man spending 2 consecutive life sentences in a harsh prison. This is where he meets Red. Set in 1947 it shows the hardships not only for Andy, an innocent man trying to get through prison but for Red, a black man trying to get out on parole but is denied every time. Great performances from Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.
- Platoon
A war movie that takes place during the height of america’s involvement in vietnam. Highlights the moral dilemmas and hardships that come with war and puts soldiers in peculiar situations. Charlie Sheen’s performance shows how average american were forced to the harsh and monstrous realities of war.
- Goodfellas
Martin Scorsese’s ode to New York’s mafia scene, following the rise of Henry Hill, his family, and his friends. Ray Liotta, Robert deniro, and Joe Pesci’s performances show how greed in America can spark a quick rise, and even quicker downfall.
- Sandlot
There is just that feeling that everyone has of being a kid and your friends coming to knock on your door and ask you to play. The sandlot shows how a kid new in town can easily make friends doing what he loves…playing baseball. Showing the joys of being a kid and being able to run around with your friends like going to the pool or the carnival carefree not needing to worry about your job the next day or having to get up for school. It doesn’t hurt that it’s backed up by an incredible soundtrack that fits perfectly with it.
- Princess Bride
A kid distracted by the wonders of new technology is forced to bond with his grandfather with a fairytale story, only to discover the wonders of storytelling. Depicting a damsel in distress, Princess Bride follows a man who’s on a journey to save his one true love. From killer eels to giant rats, this movie tells quite the tale, especially with WWE superstar Andre the giant playing one of the main characters.
- Big Trouble In Little China
WARNING: this one is an absolute wildcard. Imagine your normal damsel distress being saved by her prince in shining armor, except that prince is Jack Burton of the porkchop express. This movie puts a spin on the classic trope by continually shocking you from the CGI to characters that resemble mortal kombat fighters. It’s a film that demands to be remembered, whether or not it’s for the right reasons.
- The Graduate
Depicts a man who has just graduated college and does not know what he wants to do with his life. As he is living with his parents he is seduced by their family friend. But he falls in love with her daughter who she wants him to stay away from. Simon and Garfunkels song “Mrs. Robinson” was written for this movie.
- The Usual Suspects
Kind of like your classic who-done-it movie, The Usual Suspects follows 4 men who are all criminals with different specialties. They are picked by what they only describe as an urban myth, Keyser Soze. The most enigmatic criminal of all time. With a cast of Kevin Spacey, Benicio Del Toro, Stephen Baldwin, Kevin Pollak, and Gabriel Byrne. Who all play their characters very well.
- American Psycho
Shows a man who slips deeper and deeper into insanity throughout the movie, while trying to maintain a normal life as an investment banker. He cares about his appearance from talking deeply about his morning routine and his skincare routine. While throughout the movie there are some points where he gets astray from reality. With a great performance by Christian Bale truly capturing the insanity that is Patrick Bateman.
- Silence of The Lambs
A cannibalistic psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter helps Clarice Starling, an FBI agent. Hannibal helps Clarice with the investigation into Buffalo Bill while he also tries to escape the insane asylum he is in. Jodie Foster does a great job in this film. Fun Fact with many people thinking this quote “Hello Clarice”, is in the movie but actually this line is actually never said in the movie.
- Memento
One of Christopher Nolan’s masterpieces, Like some of his other movies this one is kind of hard to follow. Imagine a movie where it is shot chronologically in reverse and the main character is unable to make new memories but can remember some before he was attacked. He is trying to hunt down his wife’s killer. If that’s not enough to get you interested in watching it then I don’t know what will. With Guy Pearce doing an incredible job.
- Circle
Would you rather kill a pregnant lady in her 20’s, or an 11 year old child? This is just a taste of what Circle is like: 50 people are trapped in a spaceship and they have to vote who to kill until there is only one survivor. I think the concept by itself is very interesting and sometimes I think many people think of some sort of variation of this.
- Baby Driver
Everyone likes driving, well how about a getaway driver for robberies. Baby is a getaway driver, he became one due to a debt that he owes Doc, the man who organizes the robberies. He later falls in love with a diner waitress, he wants to do one last job and then leave with her. But things don’t always go right. Baby has tinnitus so he always has a ringing in his ear, and because of that he is always listening to music to drown it out. This is where this amazing soundtrack fits in, from “ Easy” by the Commodores to Egyptian Reggae this movie has music from all varietites.
