Getting a tattoo is no small decision. It’s something that will stay on your skin forever, so the process of deciding what to get can be very difficult. Not to mention, it can be quite a painful experience, too. The idea of tattoos is terrifying to some, but for Kathryn Nichols, senior, it’s a thrilling way to express herself.

Nichols currently has three tattoos that she got done at “Revelation Tattoo Shop,” and “The Mercy Seat,” and she plans on getting more in the future. Each one of her tattoos has a personal meaning, making each one a special one.

“The first one I got is a cherry blossom on my shoulder,” Nichols says. “I was born in Japan, so my dad and I wanted to get matching traditional Katana tattoos.”

For some young people, getting the support from their parents to get a tattoo done is a struggle. However, Kathryn’s family is accepting of her tattoos.

“My dad has been onboard for the few tattoos so far. It took my mom a little longer to warm up to the idea, but she accepts and likes them now.” Says Kathryn.

Most people consider the idea of getting a tattoo to be intimidating. Others simply do not like the idea of tattooing their skin. Kathryn, however, is not one of those people.

“I’ve gone into every tattoo excited. I love putting positive messages and meaningful art on my body.” Kathryn says. “My first tattoo was a little painful because it was pretty detailed, but the rest have been a breeze.”

Kathryn loves using tattoos as a way of expressing her personality, her beliefs, and her story. She intends to get more done in the future as well. If you’ve ever considered getting one done yourself, Kathryn has some advice for you.

“Make sure you are prepared beforehand, whether it be physically or mentally. Trust your body, and tell yourself that it’s going to be ok. Walking into the tattoo shop and staying calm is honestly just a mental game.”
