Athlete Action

Amidst the search for colleges, some seniors have already got it all figured out. South’s Winter signing included six seniors, each of them committed to a college to play a sport.

Chan’tice Phillips, Will Fricker, Rachel Francis, Christopher DuPree, Cassidy Taylor, and Ryan Owens all committed on November 13th, 2019. Although the process is over now, recruitment is a long, difficult process.

Phillips said, “The hardest part of the recruiting process was to maintain hope because I committed fairly later than others in my recruiting class and I felt like I was being left behind and wasn’t going to achieve my goal of playing D1,”.

With some exceptions, most athletes begin the recruitment process during their junior year. It can be a long, drawn out system.

“Now that I am committed, I feel relief and excitement. I always wanted to play sports in college, it has been a goal for a long time,” said Owens.

After the lengthy and arduous recruitment, the athletes can sit back and enjoy the security that comes along with the commitment.

“Now that I am committed, I feel so much less stressed about where I want to go or how I am going to pay for a full tuition. It always stressed me out, but now I don’t have to worry about that,” said Taylor.

These athletes have spent years dedicating their lives to their sport, and now it has finally paid off, literally.
