Bye Bye Blue Jays

A Recap of South's Week Six Victory

South football spoiled the homecoming festivities for the Blue Jays last Friday with a satisfying 29-21 dub over Liberty, advancing the team to 3-3 on the season. Starting quarterback, Matt Suchanick, continued his impressive senior campaign airing it out for 309 yards on 20/35 passing and two touchdowns.

South’s star-studded receiving core contributed to the aerial assault with standout performances from junior wide-out Eric Avery, who had 4 receptions for 129 yards and a touchdown, and senior Nathan Sharp, who had seven receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown.

In the end, it was the defense that sealed the win for the Panthers with a dramatic pick 6 from senior defensive back Ryan Owens. Senior linebacker, Michael Suchanick, led the team in tackles with nine solo and eight assisted as well as four tackles for loss. Senior linebacker, Cameron Gillespie, also got in on the action with six solo tackles, nine assisted, and a sack.

There’s a renewed sense of Panther pride as well as tremendous relief in the halls after finally surpassing the disappointing 2-8 finish of last year; solidifying rookie head coach, Alan Wilmes, as the future of the program moving forward. Even amidst the newfound success, the team isn’t becoming complacent.

The offense operating at a level we haven’t seen since Suchanick the elder, and the team continues to develop week by week before our eyes. One thing is for certain; there’s a lot to be excited about from Panther Football.
