Dynamite Debaters
This past weekend, the arguers of South, otherwise known as the debate team competed at the “Maryville Classic”, a debate tournament in Maryville, Missouri. The team brought home many awards, including 3rd overall and many first place finishes.
“This weekend, many of the underclassmen who normally compete in novice got to come out to the varsity tournament. It was really cool to see how well they did,” Amy Graham (junior) said. One of the many freshmen on the debate team, Sophia Nguyen placed in the extemporary category, with 5 of the 6 finalists being from the school that we know and love.
Besides placing, which is still great there were a few clean sweeps this weekend for the team. Sam Pfeiffer (junior), and Johnny Sterrett (senior), came out on top in public forum. “We were definitely a little underprepared and not super confident, but we ended up going undefeated, which was amazing. We were both a little surprised”, Pfeiffer said. The duo was also competing against a pretty big pool, with roughly 30 to 40 other pairs.
Some other highlights include Max Peek taking first in Lincoln Douglas and extemporary, and Luke Wengler and Riley Parman (sophomores) with second place in policy.
With the season just getting started, this year is looking to be a promising one for the debaters of Park Hill South.
