Ethan Mick rules the road

Ethan Mick is a senior at South that runs cross country. Mick has been running cross country for five years with him starting in eighth grade. Since his freshman year, he has been making it to State with the rest of his team.

He prepares to run a race the night before the same way.

“The night before we go to Chipotle. In the morning, we wake up three hours before the race and we do a warm-up jog then we head to the race,” he said.

Mick takes running seriously and does everything he can to run the best he can.

“He’s really dedicated & doesn’t ever slip up with what he’s supposed to be eating or how much he’s supposed to be running & all that,” said Ryan Chase, senior.

Mick typically runs around 60 miles every week.

“It usually sucks to do. It’s gotten easier as time has gone by, but it’s still hard,” said Mick.

Chase believes it pays off for Mick.

“Usually Ethan and Quentin and all the runners that are better than me stay running about a month after my season ends and they always have to start really running harder which makes me happy that my season is over,” said Chase.

Mick is happy with how the season is going so far.

“We did really good at pre-state and were ready to hopefully do good at districts this Saturday!” he said.

Mick and the rest of the cross country team placed at Districts within the top 30, proving that the team, including Mick, is really pushing themselves to run faster.

Mick worries about the team continuing on next year without him and his fellow seniors.

“I think they will not be as good as we all are right now, but I think they have the potential to be as good with more practice,” he said.

Mick said he listens to a variety of music when he is running during the week.

“It’s kind of just whatever I’m into at the time. Like right now, I’ve been listening to the new tame impala single. On the record, everyone should run & listen to tame impala, great combo,” he said.

Mick said he wasn’t sure why he has been running so long–he just has.

“I don’t really know if I’m being honest,” said Mick. “I think I’m pretty good at it for the most part but sometimes I don’t even know why I’ve been doing it for so long. I just trying to enjoy my last season as much as I can.”
