Freshmen First Impressions
Although it can make people anxious, high school is full of many fun and exciting experiences that you will remember forever, from football games to school dances.
As freshmen start to prepare for high school there is a lot of worries, but also much excitement. Starting high school can be very scary and overwhelming for many. It is a new environment for freshmen and full of new faces.
Riley Propes, freshman, says overall it has been a good experience, and she likes it better than Lakeview because there is a lot more freedom and teachers are more easygoing.
Students say their favorite parts are only having four blocks to get more done, Hoco week, sports because you get to be part of a team, football games and social events.
Dylan Love, freshman, says his favorite part is “All the social events like football and volleyball games where you can meet up with friends.”
At first, students say it was overwhelming to get used to a new environment and finding the classes seeing so many people. There are also more expectations and you can’t act like a kid anymore.
Although there are many exciting things about freshman year it also has its downs. Some of the negatives include a new schedule and having to adapt, the future (growing up), the early mornings and having to be independent.
Mia Personelli, a freshman volleyball player, says, “It can sometimes be hard to keep my grades up while also playing a sport… Playing volleyball has made me realize I need to manage my time while also working on improving my volleyball skills.”
When thinking about starting high school many find it overwhelming and nerve-racking. Such as trying to find classes and get around the school. There are also more expectations and knowing you have to do more.
Propes said it was overwhelming at first.
“Branching out and having to adjust yourself in a new environment. Also having kids of all different ages,” she said.
High school is a lot different than middle school with many changes.
“There is a lot more freedom in high school and the teachers are less strict,” Love said.
It is also different when you compare the amount of kids in middle school compared to high school. You go from being the oldest kids in the school to the youngest. With all the people in the hallways sometimes finding your class gets crazy.
Another big part of high school is all the activities. From sports to clubs there are many ways for everyone to be involved in school activities. A big part of high school is sports games and going to cheer on your friends.
Zoe Skram, freshman volleyball player, says, “The coaches hold you to high standards but is all worth it in the end.”
Athletes say that playing a sport has taught them about time management and the rewards of being part of a team.
Through all the craziness, tests, homework, and football games high school is a fun journey. High school can get stressful at times especially when entering a new environment, but people make many memories and stories they will have forever.
