Giving Opportunity to the Orchestra

The orchestra at South tends to go unnoticed due to the fact that there is so much going on, it’s hard to recognize them.

“Orchestra does a lot of neat things. For example kids go to state all the time and they often medal. So it would be nice if we got acknowledged for being good more often,” Maddie Carter, senior, said.

Campus, concert, and  symphonic are three different subgroups that make up orchestra. Symphonic is the most competitive group and every year they go to districts. In order to be in symphonic you have to audition. Makayla Mead, junior, started orchestra in 7th grade and has been in symphonic orchestra since her freshman year.

“I started playing the piano when I was in fifth grade. When I was in sixth grade the orchestra came around, and I was interested in what they were doing,” Mead said.

Ms. Markley and Mr. Aguilar are the two Orchestra teachers at South. They are not only there for their students through a musical aspect, but are also there to help them grow as people.

“They are both super reassuring. If you’re having a really bad day you can go talk to either one of them and they’ll just comfort you. They are really good people,” said Carter.

All the orchestras on the South side, including the middle schools, are holding a concert on Dec. 10th at 7:00 P.M. The concert will be held in the auditorium at South and anyone is welcome to come. So give the orchestra some recognition and go see them perform.
