New Music To Listen To in Quarantine

Quarantine has been accompanied by multiple projects and singles being released by artists during this time.Drake released the single “Toosie Slide” which sparked a viral Tik Tok trend, and eventually led to a debate regarding whether his lyrics were a reference to the late Michael Jackson. To accompany his single Drake released the album “Dark Lane Demo Tapes” featuring his hit song “Pain 1993” where he teamed up with Playboi Carti. Carti recently also released music of his own, dropping the single “@MEH” which received mixed reviews. While a lot of people disliked it, there was also resentment following his cancellation of his album “Whole Lotta Red”.

Spotify recently added Mac Miller’s fourth mixtape, “KIDS”, to his digital ensemble. While it’s not new music, it’s certainly exciting to have tracks like “Knock Knock”, “Kool Aid and Frozen Pizza”, and “Senior Skip Day” available to stream. It’s one of Mac Miller’s best works in my opinion, and something would recommend everyone listen to, especially those who may have disliked his later sound. Juice WRLD also recently had post-mortem material released with the drop of “Righteous”, which is great news to fans who have to spend the year mourning his loss. Going along with autotune rappers YoungBoy Never Broke Again, while he isn’t an artist that I like, he has amassed a cult following that is sure to listen to his latest album “38 Baby 2”

With quite a bit of music still being added during the COVID-19, I can’t say I’ve been a fan of all of it. But if there is one thing you can take away from this, it’s that you shouldn’t let your previous thoughts on an artist prevent you from listening to new projects. People’s sounds change over time, and any time you get the opportunity to hear something new, you get the opportunity to possibly find something you like. The hip hop genre has continued to grow and develop more unique sounds, and I think a lot of people would be surprised to find they may enjoy music they never thought they would.
