New Team, New Coaches, Same Goal
South volleyball has taken a turn with new coaches, 21 new kids, and an overall new atmosphere. Coach Williams, previously the assistant varsity coach but now the head coach, is bringing a new structure to the team.
“I would say the overall culture is new. We are taking on that family persona and family atmosphere,” Coach Williams said.
While Coach Williams is still working to build a competitive team she is also making sure that the bond for the C team, the junior varsity team, and the varsity team is healthy and fun.
With there being two new coaches and 21 new kids from transfers to out of state to freshman, it could get difficult to build a healthy team relationship. Although, Coach Williams says the “veterans” have been great leaders and the coaches are willing to make any necessary changes.
One veteran, Arley Anderson, junior, has been setter on varsity since freshman year. Anderson can agree with Coach Williams that the culture is overall very different and this year it feels more like a family.
The team went to a ropes course at William Jewel to do team bonding activities. Another way they have continued building a family atmosphere is giving each teammate a “sister”, which is a way for the older girls to get closer with the younger girls.
