Revive Our Halls
It's Time for E-Hallpass to Become a Thing of the Past
The hallways are silent. Every student in South is where they should be: in class. That’s exactly the problem.
South used to be a community: hallways filled with the voices of students on their way to the vending machines, taking a break, or working in small groups. Now, from the second someone steps foot out of the room, they are haggled to “Get to class!” The alternate seating is unused, and the halls are empty.
How did it get to this extent? All signs point to E-Hallpass! The website was originally introduced in 2020 to suppress the Coronavirus outbreak, but now, times have changed. All other restrictions have been lifted, it’s time for this to go too!
The first restriction put in place was a limit on the amount of passes students can make. Once those are used, they aren’t able to leave any class until passing time. The five minutes between classes that used to be the only time to catch up with friends are now spent rushing to the bathroom.
And, while academics are the most important part of high school, students won’t be as successful if they aren’t allowed to socialize.
By limiting their trips out of class, students’ potential is being limited as well.
It’s no secret that spending the whole day cooped up in a classroom is not the way to make students enjoy learning. These four years set people up for the rest of their lives, so it’s important that students develop a good relationship with school now. To do this, individual problems should be dealt with individually, not by restricting everyone.
The solution is a simple one: restore South’s freedom! Start small by removing the pass limit and work from there. By allowing students to spend some time outside of class, or with their peers, life will be restored to the halls! Not only will the school community become closer, but students will also have more motivation to show up if they know they can see their friends.
E-Hallpass may have been helpful in the beginning, but it has become detrimental to the school lives of many students. It’s time for Park Hill South’s silent, empty halls to be restored to the busy community they once were!
