South Soccer Senior Night

The Panthers were able to pick up a 2-1 win against Liberty Oct. 21 on senior night with some hard work and a few late-game heroics.

Winning this game puts the Panthers in a position to get the one seed in District. After suffering a 0-3 loss to Liberty earlier in the season, this game gives the Panthers a confidence boost going into districts, some players said.

“Beating them this close to districts feels good and lets us really know where we are as a team and how we have gotten better,” said Cade Meek, senior.

Other players said it felt good because they are the rival in this year’s districts.

“It was a good game for the team because now we know that we can beat them and definitely are more confident if we play again in district,” said Mudia Reuben, sophomore.

The game started off with the Panthers taking an early lead from a Jacob Garza goal. Then, later in the first half, Liberty was able to equalize off a freekick. The game stayed that way for the rest of the first half.

As the second half went on, the game stayed 1-1. But with 20 seconds left on the clock, the Liberty defense lost the ball. Reuben picked up the ball and dribbled past the goalie and passed it into the goal.

“Goal Panthers” came over the speakers as the bench and stands erupted. With only eight seconds on the clock, the Panthers avoided overtime and picked up and big exciting win.

“You guys will never forget this game,” said Coach Chris Farmer in the post-game huddle.

Now, the Panthers move on for their last conference and district game of the season on Oct. 24, vs Liberty North. If they win that game they will secure the one seed going into districts.
