South Soccer Wins Twice This Week

South soccer team was able to get two wins this week against St. Joe and Staley as they bounced back from a 0-3 loss against Liberty.

South was able to beat St. Joe 1-0 but team members said they think there are a lot of things they can do better.

“We need to play quicker, play more with the wings and, better shot selection,” said Mudia Reuben, sophomore.

Playing the ball quicker seemed to be a common thing mentioned by many other players.

“We need to talk more on the field so we can know when to switch and the whole game just needs to be faster,” said Cade Meek, senior.

But it wasn’t all bad for south against St. Joe. Many players said the amount of possession and the passing accuracy were some positives the team can take away.

The Staley game was a very different story for the team. They went down early but were able to come back and get two goals before halftime from Rueben and senior Dawson Evans.

But early into the second half, Staley was able to tie the game back up. With regular time coming to an end, a new face appeared on the South bench. Freshman TJ Rouse was pulled out of the stands and brought over to play.

With the game staying tied the rest of the half, both teams prepared for the start of the first overtime period.

As time wound down in the first overtime period, senior Ty Rouse played a ball from half up to his brother who took a touch and hit it, scoring the game-winning goal. The bench went crazy, running to dogpile onto TJ in celebration.

“It was just crazy scoring the goal to win the game and the assist coming from my brother just completed it,” said TJ.

With the season just starting, the team looks like it has found its footing and is ready to start going. Their next game is Sept. 24 vs Truman High School.
