Sporting KC’s Semifinal Match
On Thursday night, Sporting KC played in the MLS Western Conference playoff semifinal game against Minnesota United FC. Sporting started off strong, as they put many shots on frame and held a majority of the possession. Johnny Russell, a forward for Sporting, had a few close shots and other impressive defensive plays. Unexpectedly in the 27th minute, Molino, a forward for Minnesota, calmly placed a goal in the corner of the net after a quick counter-attack on Sporting’s defense.
Minnesota was emboldened by their goal and Sporting was unable to match their intensity. Eight minutes after their first goal, Molina scored another goal by volleying a chipped ball. This caused a lot of distress and confusion amongst the crowd because Sporting wasn’t performing to their full potential. A few minutes before the half, Minnesota had a corner kick opportunity. A lapse in defensive marking by Sporting resulted in Minnesota scoring their 3rd goal of the match, right before the half, leaving the score 3-0.
Sporting KC came out from halftime fired up and hungry, knowing they needed to step up their game. They battled to get back into the game, but the Loon’s defense stood strong to ensure their advancement. This resulted in a loss for Sporting KC meaning they are out of the playoffs. Minnesota United FC will play in the Western Finals Conference match against the Seattle Sounders on Monday night for a spot in the MLS Cup.
