Stay-At-Home Hobbies
If someone had told Kansas City teenagers that they’d spend months stranded at home, I doubt they’d believe them. However, here we are.
COVID-19 is to blame for the current stay-at-home event that we’re all participating in. It has provided us with hours and hours of free time. Which begs the question; what do teens do to keep busy in quarantine? Some South students have used the time to begin new hobbies.
“I started woodworking. I already had an interest in it, so I thought it would be a fun thing to do in my free time,” said Jessica Eisler, sophomore.
Eisler finished her first big project a year ago and hasn’t done much with it since. That is, until quarantine began.
“I find it really relaxing to do whenever I am stuck in my house,” said Eisler.
Without the time off from school and other activities, Eisler thinks this hobby would’ve been harder to start, but she hopes to continue even after the chaos is gone.
It seems some quarantined minds think alike, as two South students have started the same hobby.
Sophomores, Katie Claunch and Abby Miller, have picked up the ukulele.
“I’m glad I started because it teaches me the basics of music,” said Claunch.
Claunch hopes to not only continue to play the ukulele but also become skilled in other instruments.
Miller only started to learn to occupy her boredom but also hopes to continue her ukulele playing. She received the instrument a few years ago as a gift and has just now picked it up. In her eyes, the gift would’ve continued to gather dust without the current circumstances.
“I probably wouldn’t have started without the quarantine. It took me two years and a pandemic to start,” said Miller.
No matter how they started, we’re glad South students are staying occupied.
Quarantine is providing teens with more free time than they know what to do with. But, hey, that’s what new hobbies are for.
