The Freshman’s Biggest FANs
FANs is back and better than ever. Meredith Williams, german teacher, and sponsor of the FANs has brought the program back to South. Williams brought FANs back because other teachers thought that they were missing something with the new students coming in. FANs is the Freshman Mentor Program, in which juniors and seniors can become mentors and have their own group of freshmen to help out around South.
“My FANs have been super helpful because none of the freshman know what’s really going on.” said Maya Shapiro, freshman.
Their is a lot of responsibility when it comes to being a mentor: the mentors have to make sure they have lessons ready to go, they try and get freshmen involved in activities around the school, but they also have to find their own time to study since FANs takes up their studying time.
“Although we don’t get that studying time we still get A+ hours, early release, parking, and crewnecks, so if you think about it the pros outway the cons.” said Abby Ahrendt, junior.
Each month the FANs talk about a new subject. October was studying skills and November the FANs will start talking about ways to cope with anxiety, how to handle mental stress, etc.
Overall it is a good things FANs are back because it allows the freshmen to interact with some of the upperclassmen and hopefully makes their transition into high school easier.
